VAREN (Vegetation and Asset Recognition for Electrical Network) is an open source library from Hydro-Québec's research centre. It reads mobile LiDAR point clouds from overhead distribution networks and extracts information utilities can act on. The library includes four algorithms: a point cloud classifier for power network assets, an overhead span extractor, a mathematical reconstruction method for heavily obstructed power lines, and a vegetation encroachment detector. These address a common problem, namely that mobile LiDAR data is often incomplete or blocked by vegetation. VAREN aims to give utilities reusable foundation for LiDAR-based grid analytics to help map their assets and assess vegetation risk.
